In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
